Lawrence E. “Larry” Welsh, Jr., 79 of Washington passed away Sunday-September 25, 2016 at the Donnell House after a 3 year illness. Mr. Welsh was born July 16, 1937 in San Luis Obispo, California and was baptized in the Old Mission Church, San Juan Capistrano, California, the son of the late Lawrence E. Welsh Sr. and Elizabeth A. Pollinger Welsh.
Mr. Welsh was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Washington and St. Leos Parish in Naples, Fl. In 1955 he graduated from Immaculate Conception High School. After high school he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and was honorably discharged in 1959. He was a licensed Pennsylvania Realtor prior to entering into the plastic business in 1977 with his good friend and partner Ralph B. Andy. He retired in 1998 as Executive Vice President of Polycom Huntsman Plastics.
He was an avid golfer and was a member of the Nemacolin Country Club for over 45 years and formerly served on the Board of Governors. He was also a member of Southpointe Golf Club.
On December 11, 2007 in Immaculate Conception Church he married the love of his life; Kathleen Flynn Reda who survives. He is also survived by two step-children; Louis M. Reda and Kristen M. (Robert) Sroka and a special daughter-in-law; Lisa M. (Dr. Robert) Good. Also surviving is a son; Lawrence E. Welsh, III.
He was a devoted grandfather who cherished his grandchildren and was always there for them. Surviving are his grandchildren; Reilly Welsh and Liam Welsh, step-grandchildren; L.J. Reda and Sophia Ann Sroka.
He was one of eight children, surviving are sisters; Pat Worthington of Sausalito, California, Nancy (Mike) Mateja of Maui, Hawaii, Carolyn (Don) Crosby of Sebastopol, California, Judith (Steve) Miller of Mill Valley, California, Marylee (Randle) Johnson of Napa, California, Linda Jones of Haleiwa, Hawaii and a brother; Michael Welsh of San Francisco, California., a special brother-in-law; Michael “Mickey” Flynn of Washington and many wonderful loving nieces and nephews.
Larry was a kind and generous man and would help anyone in need. He was blessed to have many good friends especially Ralph Andy who was so very special and walked with him every step of the way through his journey with cancer. No truer friend could a person have. They were like brothers.
Mr. Welsh was preceded in death by not only his parents but by 2 brother-in-laws; Bill Worthington & Jim Jones.
Friends will be received on Tuesday-September 27, 2016 from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. in the Warco-Falvo Funeral Home, Inc. Wilson at E. Katherine Avenues, Washington, S. Timothy Warco, supervisor/director, Susan Falvo Warco, director, S. Timothy Warco II, director. A prayer service will be held at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday-September 28, 2016 in the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. in the Immaculate Conception Church. Full military rites will follow in the Washington Cemetery and will be accorded by the American Legion Edwin Scott Linton Post #175 and the United States Marine Corps.
