Joan Calabro
/Joan Calabro, 91, of Washington, PA, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 17, 2025. She was born on February 24, 1933, in Washington, PA, a daughter of the late Samuel and Elizabeth Provenzano Foglia. Mrs. Calabro was a 1950 graduate of Trinity High School and later went on to graduate from Penn Commercial. She was a devout Roman Catholic. Mrs. Calabro was at one time employed as a clerk at the Washington County Veterans Affairs Office. She volunteered with Masses at the Washington Hospital and was a volunteer with the American Cancer Society. Mrs. Calabro taught controlled reading at St. Patrick Grade School and was also a receptionist at one time at her daughter’s business, “Avanti Hair”. She was also a former Notary Public. Mrs. Calabro was a devout wife, loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She was an amazing cook who could make a delicious meal out of nothing in 20 minutes. Mrs. Calabro was extremely generous and hospitable and always took in everyone’s kids. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
On September 19, 1953, she married the love of her life, Carmen Calabro, who passed away on August 5, 2011. Surviving are two daughters, Nancy (John) Sargent of Washington, PA, and Susan (Jeffrey) Hirst of Canonsburg, PA; a son, Carmen (Joann) Calabro of Canonsburg, PA; a sister, Sharon Fonner of Florida; eight grandchildren, Juliet (Jarrod) Highberger, Christine (Christopher) Shanks, Marguerite (Sam) Miller, Celeste (Matt) Keenan, Marielle (Tim Myers) Sargent, Alexander Hirst, Celena Calabro, and Matthias Hirst; seven great grandchildren, Claudya, Carmen, Sadie, Mabel, Tessa, Otis, and Ariella, and three sisters-in-law, Alice Calabro, Myrna Calabro, and Janet Calabro. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and Richard Foglia, and by two sisters, Eleanor Campagna and Angela Sonson.
Friends will be received on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, from 2 P.M. until 8 P.M. in the Warco-Falvo Funeral Home, Inc., Wilson at E. Katherine Ave., Washington, S. Timothy Warco, Owner/Supervisor, S. Timothy Warco II, Director, Holly Renay Warco, Director. Departing Prayers of Transfer will be held at 9:00 A.M. on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, in the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 A.M. in the Immaculate Conception Church, St. James Parish, 119 W.
