Joyce Dian Pozell Smith

Joyce Dian Pozell Smith, 69, of Washington, died Saturday, April 1, 2023 unexpectedly in the home she raised her children in and loved. 

Joyce was born Dec. 25, 1953 at Reynolds Memorial Hospital in Glendale, W.Va., a daughter of Nellie Grimm Pozell and the late Larry Pozell. She graduated from John Marshall High School in 1971.  

Joyce did everything she did with intensity. That includes loving her children, ruthlessly playing cards, outselling her competitors (at whatever she was selling), growing an entire greenhouse full of flowers, laughing until she cried, and screaming in horror at all cats (including kittens). 

She is remembered for her industry, her selfless generosity with her family and friends, her incomparable chocolate chip cookies and apple pies, the loud volume at which she would play James Taylor and Motown hits, and her willingness to share her un-sugarcoated opinion, with fervor, on any topic, at any time.

She was a member of the Washington Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses and she enjoyed discussing her faith. 

She started each morning with “coffee talk” over a pot of almost undrinkably-strong coffee with her husband of 47 years, David Allen Smith, who she married Nov. 29, 1975 in Moundsville, W.Va. 

They had four children in quick succession to vie for her attention: Jessica Vidricksen (John), Justin Smith (Casie), Micah Smith, and Brittany Szekely (Joel). Joyce is also survived by her most frequent topic of conversation, her grandchildren: Zoe and Levi Vidricksen, Josephine Smith, and Harper and Colton Szekely; her sisters, Christy Dickerson and Debbie Fitzpatrick; many cousins; nieces and nephews; and a very spoiled goldendoodle, Livi.

A memorial service will be held for friends and family on Saturday, April 22, 2023 at 2:00 P.M. in the Warco-Falvo Funeral Home, Inc., Wilson at East Katherine Ave., Washington, S.
