Anand Karamcheti
/Anand Karamcheti, of Washington, a retired surgeon who served thousands of patients in Southwestern Pennsylvania during his more than 35 years in practice, passed away in his sleep on February 6, 2022. He was 76.
Dr. Karamcheti was born in Vizianagaram, Andhra Pradesh, India in 1945, the middle child of Dr. Satyanarayana and Ratna Karamcheti. He was raised in India and earned his medical degree from Andhra University.
In 1969, Dr. Karamcheti wed Rama Praturi, to whom he was married until her death in 2013. After the birth of their first son, Aditya, in 1972, the couple moved to the United States so Dr. Karamcheti could continue his studies in New Jersey and New York City, where their second son, Deepak, was born.
Dr. Karamcheti completed his residency at the University of Pittsburgh and settled in Washington in 1977, where he opened his medical practice. He was a fixture at both Washington and Canonsburg Hospitals, as well as the VA Hospital in Pittsburgh, where he served veterans each week for decades. He retired from practicing medicine in 2013.
He was an avid gardener, stamp collector, cook and reader and was devoted to his faith. Dr. Karamcheti spoke several languages and was fluent in Sanskrit. He loved bad science fiction, classical Indian music and good scotch.
He is survived by his two sons, Aditya (Erenia) of Washington and Deepak (Manjula) of Massachusetts; grandchildren, Ramaniah, Anand, Jaya and Kush; siblings, Saorajani (Madhav) Madhira and Prabhakar (Vijaya) Karamcheti of Hyderabad, India; as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
