Dr. Marian N. Ream

Former Educator and Florida Supreme Court Mediator

Dr. Marian N. Ream, of Jensen Beach, Florida, formerly of Washington, Pa passed away Sunday June 14, 2015 surrounded by her family. Marian was born on January 13, 1933 in Johnstown, PA to the late Harold Cover and Lillian Ringler Cover. Marian was preceded in death by her husband Dr. Charles “Coach” Ream and her brothers Richard and Robert Cover. She is survived by her two children Cynthia Ream Phillips (John DeSantis) and Steven Ream (Jamie).  She was the always present and ever supportive grandmother of Ashley Phillips, Joseph Phillips, Marian Phillips and John Phillips. One brother; Edwin (Margie) Cover and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Dr. Ream attended Cochran Jr. High School and was graduated from Johnstown High School in 1950.  She played basketball and was a majorette. Upon graduation she performed in synchronized swimming performances. Marian later became Health, Physical Education and Recreation Director at the Washington PA YWCA where she developed fitness programs and taught synchronized swimming as well as swimming lessons for people of all ages. In May of 1971 she became one of the first four women to graduate from W & J with a B.A. in English and a teaching credential. Marian along with her daughter, Cynthia (’77) and granddaughter Ashley (08) are the first three generation females to have been graduated from W & J. Marian taught one year at Trinity Jr. High School and was then hired by the Washington School District in 1972 to teach English and was the boys and girls tennis coach. She was an avid tennis player during the 70’s and early 80’s. It was at this time that she and her husband became involved with the Pittsburgh Triangles professional tennis team, interviewing many tennis greats such as Billie Jean King, Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert for Channel 3 in Washington. Marian also attained two doctorates, a Ph.D. in 1981 and an Ed.D. in 1984 from WVU. 

From 1976 until the mid 90’s Marian, along with her husband Dr. Charles Ream formed Universal Learning Corporation and developed schools in Korea, the Philippines and South America for Westinghouse and Bechtel Corporations. They traveled extensively throughout the world for several years.

Dr. Ream was a charter member of the Allenberry Swim and Tennis Club in Boiling Springs, PA and spent 14 summers there.  While there she and her husband earned their Private Pilots License.

Upon her retirement in 1992 Marian and her husband moved to Jensen Beach, Florida. She and her husband developed fitness programs for Florida Power and Light. In the mid 90’s Dr. Ream and her husband became Florida Supreme Court Mediators mediating throughout Florida. She had volunteered at the Victory Children’s Home and was current President of the Island Dunes II condo association. Never one to sit still, Marian started running 5K races in her 60’s, loved to golf and fish and was in the gym everyday up until a month ago.

Friends will be received on Wednesday-June17, 2015 from 4 P.M. until 7 P.M. in the Warco-Falvo Funeral Home Inc., Wilson at East Katherine Ave. Washington, S.
