Edwin West

Edwin West of Washington, PA died on the morning of Monday, November 18, 2024, from pancreatic cancer.  In his last weeks, he received love and admiration from friends who made sure that his illness did not leave him isolated.  He was grateful for the support of his friends from St. James Parish, where he had been a dedicated parishioner for over 25 years.  Ed was a man of great faith, incredible service, and tremendous strength.

Ed West was born on March 11, 1948, to Edwin West and Dorothy Draper and had one sister.  He was raised in the Mt Oliver and Carrick neighborhoods of Pittsburgh.  Immediately after high school, Ed served four years in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War.  Soon after returning home and needing a job, he saw an advertisement for the iron workers.  Without hesitation, Ed applied because he "was at his mother’s house and needed a job.”  For over 30 years, he worked as an ironworker in the Pennsylvania Ironworkers Local #3.  His construction career included work on the PPG Building, David L. Lawrence Convention Center, bridges throughout Western PA and various other jobs in West Virginia and Kentucky. Ed was also a hobbyist who crafted steel structures at home, and his beloved garden was lined with 1" rebar posts.

After his retirement, Ed became a dedicated man of faith and service.  He attended daily Mass and volunteered for any church program or service.  Ed was an active member of the Knights of Columbus.  In 2015, Ed was recognized for his service and faith by the Diocese of Pittsburgh as Distinguished Volunteer.  Beyond anything, Ed West was a humble and faithful man, full of humor, and love for those around him. He asked to be remembered in prayer.
