Patricia Powell Murphy

Patricia “Patty” Powell Murphy, 88, of Washington peacefully passed on January 8, 2024, to join her beloved husband, Earl Paul “Pete” Murphy, Jr. in the arms of our Heavenly Father.  Patty was born October 14, 1935, a daughter of the late Lynn Powell and Mary Elizabeth “Betty” Weirich Powell. 

A 1953 Trinity High School Graduate, she and her husband remained active with other classmates in organizing class reunions.  After graduation, Patty worked in the blood bank at the Washington Hospital, then at Mellon Bank as a teller until the birth of her first child.  Afterwards she dedicated her life to being a devoted and loving mother and wife.  She kept the home fire burning while her lifetime love, Pete, opened and operated Murphy’s Lawn and Garden Center. 

Patty was also a long-time member of the Church of the Covenant where she taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, lead mission trips for Church teens and worked to help organize the Joy of Sharing Christmas. 

Mourning the loss of their loving mother and grandmother are her children, Lynn Murphy Sylvis (Chuck Sylvis), Paul Murphy (Kay Harrison Murphy) and Mark Murphy (Alice Sacco Murphy) and her 12 grandchildren, Philip Spina (Jennie), Chuck Sylvis (Allie), Eric Spina (Carly), Chris Sylvis (Erica), Marc Spina (Emily), Kyle Murphy, Scott Murphy (Jessica), Chad Murphy (Leesha), John Murphy (Spencer), Jay Murphy (Brie), Logan Murphy and Drew Murphy.  Following her in death was her youngest son, David Murphy.

Also surviving are her brother, William “Bill” Powell (Carol) and 18 great grandchildren, Tyler “TJ”, Chloe, Clara, Violet, Giselle, Maverick, Corinne, Savanna, Maria, Roman, Phillip, Harper, Paige, Hudson, Reese, Casey, Helios and Lillian. 

The family thanks the wonderful staff at Strabane Woods for their excellent care of Patty and Suncrest Hospice.

A memorial service for Patty and her son, David, will be held on Saturday, March 16, 2024, at 11:00 A.M. at the Church of the Covenant, 267 E. Beau St., Washington, PA.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Church of the Covenant, 267 E. Beau St., Washington, PA  15301.
