Eugene F. Paluso

Dr. Eugene F. Paluso, born on February 21, 1936, in Charleroi, PA, has left an indelible mark on the world.  It is with heavy hearts that we announce his passing.

Eugene was the youngest child of Arthur Paluso, MD, and Catherine Kendrick Paluso.  Raised by a father who exemplified the pursuit of excellence in medicine, Eugene’s path was influenced by the principles of service and commitment to healing.  His mother clearly played a vital role in shaping his character, fostering an environment of love and support that would guide him throughout his remarkable life.

After attending Charleroi High School (where he was a founding member of the Roadhawks Car Club), he attended Washington & Jefferson College.

Following his undergraduate studies, he proudly served his country in the United States Army as an Armor Officer.  The discipline, leadership, and sense of responsibility instilled during his military service influenced his approach to both his medical practice and his interactions with colleagues, patients, and the community.

Eugene's academic journey reached its pinnacle at the University of Bologna Medical School, where he fulfilled his lifelong dream of becoming a doctor.  Imbued with a global perspective and a wealth of knowledge from one of the world's oldest and most prestigious medical institutions, he emerged as a skilled and compassionate practitioner.

He began his professional career in the emergency department of Washington Hospital where he met his future wife, nurse Patricia Colditz.

Dr. Paluso then embarked on a distinguished career in the field of Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) medicine by completing residency at the University of Pittsburgh’s Eye & Ear Hospital.  Setting roots in Washington, PA, he devoted nearly five decades to the practice, becoming a cornerstone of healthcare in the community.

He was a man of unwavering dedication and passion, both in his professional and personal life.  He was a beloved father, brother, uncle, grandfather, friend, and colleague.  No matter how he was addressed, Dr. Paluso, Eugene, Gene, Dad, his warmth, kindness, selflessness, and sense of humor endeared him to all who had the privilege of knowing him.  Gene & Patti loved to take their family on culinary and cultural adventures, particularly to the New England coast; a daily search for coffee, a new tobacco store, and a great restaurant always ensued.  Wonderful memories and the number of pipes in his collection increased greatly each trip.  Their sense of wanderlust remains in their children’s lives today and forever.

His passing is a profound loss, not only for those who were fortunate enough to know him personally but also for the broader community that benefited from his contributions.  As we mourn his departure, let us celebrate the life of a remarkable individual who dedicated his years to family first always, to the betterment of humanity, and to the art of telling a great story.  Many of you will remember his signature pipe and cup of coffee, ever present at his children’s activities, which he rarely missed.  It cannot go unmentioned that he was a proud member of the Bandits at Lone Pine Country Club, where his curiously high handicap insured some amount of winnings each week.

Eugene was preceded in death by his parents, his four brothers (Arthur, Gilbert, Paul, and Robert), his in-laws (Fritz & Eleanor Colditz), and his wife of 60 years Patti.

Surviving are his children, Cherise of Albuquerque, NM, Eugene (Robin) of Charleston, SC, Cynthia (Anders) of Carolina Beach, NC, Brian (Pamela) of Pittsburgh, PA, and Robert of Philadelphia, PA.  Also surviving are grandchildren, Makenzi, Trevor, Roman, Kendrick, Abigail, Nicholas, Alex, Natalie and his sister-in-law, Susan Usher.  “Fun Uncle Eug” was also beloved by numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom he cherished.
