Heaven’s gates opened and Dorothy Hassinger went home to be with Jesus on February 2, 2023.  She is survived by her daughters, Elaine Hassinger, Karen Hassinger, Kimberly Hassinger, and step-daughter, Ernestine Stevenson, granddaughter, Rachel Haak (Kyle), and grandsons, David Haak (Julia), Jordan Reichenberger (Brittaney), and Ian Reichenberger, as well as many nieces and nephews.

A devout Christian, Dorothy raised her daughters in the church and read the Bible to them nightly.  She also faithfully held weekly ladies Bible studies in her home for decades.  She shared her faith with everyone she met and was always willing to pray for anyone who needed prayer and encouragement.  Dorothy was also very intelligent and quick witted, even in her last months and weeks.  Dorothy was a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker.  After raising her daughters, she attended nursing school and became a nurse, working initially in hospitals, then in private duty.  She loved her career as a nurse and retired at the age of seventy-five.

Although Dorothy was born and raised in Pittsburgh, she loved warm climates and was fortunate enough to have lived in Florida, Arizona, and Texas.  When she was in her early nineties, and as her health began to decline, she moved back to the Pittsburgh area to live with her daughter, Karen, who cared for her daily.

The following friends and family need to be mentioned for the love and care they gave to Dorothy in her later years and as she went through her courageous fight with cancer: grandson, Jordan Reichenberger, had an especially close relationship with her which included studying the Bible together; Dorothy’s niece, Christine Pennington, brightened up her Sundays and was her beautician/spa lady for the past two years; stepdaughter, Ernestine Lander, spent many hours with her, providing care and companionship; her niece Lois Yerxa, who never missed her birthday and visited or called her regularly; Laura Bryant and Dee Stevens were Dorothy’s close friends in Texas, who enriched her life for twenty years.  The family is also thankful to all the loving caretakers from Touching Hearts, Amedisys and Amedisys Hospice, who provided loving care and helped their mother these last few years.  Dorothy’s family and friends love her and will miss her forever.
