Julia Strnisha Muncie

Julia “Julie” Strnisha Muncie, 90, of Canonsburg, peacefully passed away on Friday, January6, 2023, surrounded by those she loved and those that loved her dearly.

She was born and named Magdalene Julia in Washington, PA, on May 11, 1932, the daughter of the late Martin and Sophia (Bokal-Yuvan) Strnisha.  Both of her parents immigrated to the United States from Yugoslavia.  She was the youngest of ten children in her family.

Her childhood was spent working in the family neighborhood grocery business and neighborhood bar.  She helped taking grocery orders, delivering grocery orders, stocking the grocery shelves, and sweeping the floor in the store.  At Lincoln Tavern, the local gathering place, she and her siblings cleaned the bar, cooked in the kitchen, stocked the coolers, and helped with the general upkeep of the building and business.

She attended Trinity High School and Penn Commercial Business School.  Mrs. Muncie worked as a secretary for a trucking company for one year before she accepted full-time employment with Hazel-Atlas Glass.  It was here that she met her one true love.  She was a stay-at-home mom when her children were very young before returning to work at Cox’s Caldwell and then later at The Bon Ton.

She married Nicholas Muncie on July 18, 1952.  They were married only 30 years before her love died at age 50.  Their marriage produced four children.  She never remarried, saying she “had her one love”.

Mrs. Muncie lived her entire life in the Washington/Canonsburg area where she was a faithful member of St. James Parish (Immaculate Conception Church).  She was a quiet unassuming woman who shunned the spotlight.  She lived a life of strength and kindness.

Mrs. Muncie was a most devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.  She enjoyed many activities such as vacationing at Seabrook Island in South Carolina, exercising at the Cameron Wellness Center, eating out, and watching game shows. Mrs. Muncie was a spirited fan of the Pittsburgh Penguins planning her activities around game day and game time.  When her grandchildren were young, she spent many days and nights at soccer games, track events, dance recitals, deck hockey and ice hockey games, and cheerleading competitions.  More than anything, she loved spending time with her family.  Nothing was more important to her than her children.

Our Mom was our matriarch and our guide.  She was a shining example of sacrifice and love.  We were truly Blessed to have had her as Our Mother.  She will always remain in our hearts.

Surviving children are daughter, Marcia (Tony) Sacco of Canonsburg, daughter, Sophie (Alan) Svetz of Washington, daughter, Julie (Rik) Medic of Butler, and daughter-in-law, Mary Ann Muncie (the late Marty) of Canonsburg.  She is also survived by five grandchildren, Martin (Dayna) Muncie of Canonsburg, Nicholas (Jenna) Muncie of Canonsburg, Kristen (Anthony) Rotolo of South Fayette, Alan Richard Svetz of Washington and Nathan Medic of Fredericksburg, VA and five great grandchildren, Abigail Muncie, Martin Muncie III, Gabriella Lee Rotolo, Jameson Muncie, and Daniella Grace Rotolo.  She also shared a special relationship with her niece, Joyce Strnisha, daughter of her late brother William.

Julia also received excellent care from Darlah and the Staff at Quality Family Care Adult Day Care Services.

Deceased, in addition to her husband, Nick, and her parents, are her son, Martin; three sisters, Christine Brennen, Helen Spehar, and Sophie Soltis, and six brothers, William Strnisha, Martin Strnisha, Edward Strnisha, Tony Yuvan, Frank Yuvan, and Leo Strnisha (who died in infancy).
