Jack L. Picio
Jack L. Picio, 80, passed away on Sunday, August 22, 2021 in Washington Hospital with his loving daughters Kristy and Susan by his side. He was born on January 14, 1941 in Washington Hospital, the son of the late Frank J. Picio and Anne Serwatka Picio, of Washington. As the story goes, he met his beloved wife Nancy in the nursery of Washington Hospital where she was born, 3 days after him, on January 17, 1941. They were married on June 13, 1964 and lived their entire married life in Pancake.
In his early life Jack developed an extreme talent in marksmanship, becoming an elite competitor of .22 caliber shooting. Upon graduation from Immaculate Conception High School in 1958 he went on to attend St. John’s University in NY where he was named the youngest Team Captain in St John’s Rifle Team history. Jack was a National Champion in rifle shooting with Frazier Simplex Rifle Club. He was part of the 1960 National Four Position Championship Team whose combined score set the national record. His team was inducted into the PA-Washington Greene County Chapter Hall of Fame in 2002. He was part of the 1950’s - 1960’s legacy in which Washington Pennsylvania’s Frazier Simplex Rifle Club was named “The Capital of 22 Caliber Rifle Shooting in the United States” by the National Rifle Association.
Jack built on that early discipline to successfully work in Credit and Finance at various businesses throughout a nearly 40 year professional career. From Jessop Steel, to Joy Manufacturing to working his way up to Vice President -Treasurer of Levinson Steel to finishing out his professional career as President of the Pennsylvania Association Of Credit Management from where he retired in 2000. Jack was viewed by all as a leader who always strived to do the right thing. He was an honorable man who was known for his exceptional work ethic as well as his attention to detail.
In his post-retirement life he developed a love of photography. He was often sought out by friends and family for his exceptional abilities to create beautiful photos and collages. He had extraordinary abilities with woodworking as well. He could build anything. He was extremely mechanical minded, absolutely loved cars and was known for his “spotless” clean cars by all.
Jack is survived by his loving daughters, Kristy (Robert) Volz of Marianna and Susan Patz of Washington, as well as his 5 grandchildren, Deanna Volz (Japan), Caleb Patz (Washington), Becca Volz (Marianna), Elizabeth Volz (Marianna) and Katie Patz (Washington). He was so proud of each and every one of them and their accomplishments. There is no doubt his favorite role by far was “Pap-Pap” to these 5. He is also survived by his “baby” sister, Carole Taylor (Jim) Benedict, Lancaster, SC., nephew, Michael (Susan) Picio, Virginia Beach, VA, and niece, Denise (Sergio) Huerta of Charlotte, NC, and several cousins. Jack also leaves behind a lifelong friend and neighbor, Frances Shrontz.
Nothing in life was more important to Jack than his family, particularly holiday celebrations. Jack was known for his Italian frittata for major holiday breakfasts. One never left Jack’s home hungry or without an “I love you.” We will miss his sense of humor, his sarcasm and his unyielding devotion to FAMILY.
Jack was predeceased by the love of his life, his wife, Nancy Haney Picio, in 2019 after 56 years of marriage. His father, Frank Picio passed away in 1963, his mother, Anne Picio in 1994, and his brother, Richard Picio in 2003.
