Betty Lee Leckie
Betty Lee Leckie, 94, of Washington, died peacefully Friday, April 30, 2021, at Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh. She was born April 2, 1927, in Brookville, the daughter of the late John and Anna Wonderling. She received her Registered Nurse degree from Pittsburgh Presbyterian Hospital and was an operating room nurse in Pittsburgh and later at Washington Hospital. She paused her nursing career to raise her children but resumed working as a private duty nurse for many more years.
Betty was a 70-year member of Faith United Presbyterian Church.
On December 23, 1949, Betty married Joseph B. Leckie, who died December 12, 2013. Her husband, “Joe”, was Director of Development and later, Vice President, Development, of W & J College, and it is very fair to say Betty was an active, albeit unofficial, partner in her husband’s service to the college. The W&J College General Alumni Association presented her its Distinguished Service Award.
Even though Betty had many interests, including golfing, traveling, and dividing her time living in Washington and in Florida, her main enjoyment came from making time for her loving husband, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, especially when it came time for special family occasions, holidays, and the many activities of her grandchildren.
Surviving are Betty’s children, Scott (Patty) Leckie & Jim (Sheryl) Leckie, both of Washington, and a daughter, Susan (Bob) Harrell of Norfolk, Virginia. Her seven grandchildren are Kylie (John) Mills, Justin (Regina) Leckie, Ryan Leckie, Lindsey (Matthew Wittman) Lehman, Jessica Lehman, Alexander (Jessica) Leckie, MD, and LCDR Elizabeth (Kevin) Kennedy, USN. Betty’s seven great grandchildren are William and Leo Mills, Charley and Morgan Leckie, Sutton and Gus Wittman, and Gianna Leckie. Also surviving is Gary Lehman, OD, of Hertford, North Carolina.
