Leo Shawin
Leon “Leo” Shawin, 91 passed away on Monday-June 18, 2018 in Southminster Place in Washington. Leo was born on June 9, 1927 in Washington the son of the late Antonio Shawinski and Stella Parcha Shawinski Karaula.
Leo was a lifelong member of the First Lutheran Church where he was baptized, confirmed and on August 21, 1949, married. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Matilda “Tillie” Aloia Shawin. Leo and Tillie had three daughters, Carol (Rocky) Cancelmi, Cathy (Rick) Allinder, and Cindy (Scott) Linville. They were blessed with six grandchildren, Chris (Dane) Hockenbrock, Rana (Danny) Hockman, Brian (Alexandra) Linville, Emily (Erik) Fargo, Ryan Allinder, and Derek Allinder, two great-grandchildren, Anna Marie Hockman and Rock Hockman. Leo is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Family was very important to Leo and he enjoyed the many family gatherings in their home in Nokomis Park.
Leo left High School to serve in the U.S. Navy during WWII. After his service on the USS Roosevelt, he graduated from Trinity High School in 1947. Leo had a very successful career as an Insurance Sales Agent. Upon his retirement he truly was missed by many. He was a true salesman and loved interacting with people.
In addition to spending time with his family, Leo’s passions included fishing, gardening, dartball, and watching his grandchildren partake in their many activities. Leo also enjoyed a good cigar and a glass of scotch. Leo was actively involved in several local organizations; Kiwanis, American Legion Edwin Scott Linton Post # 175, Shriners, Sunset Lodge #623 F.&A.M. and most recently was a volunteer at the Washington Hospital.
In addition to his parents, all of his siblings, Helen Navoy, Albert Shawinski, Stan Shaw and Wilma Richmond are deceased.
Friends will be received on Thursday-June 21, 2018 from 2:00 - 4:00 & 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. in the Warco-Falvo Funeral Home, Inc., Wilson at E. Katherine Avenues, Washington, S. Timothy Warco, supervisor/director, Susan Falvo Warco, director, S. Timothy Warco II, director. Sunset Lodge #623 F.&A.M. will render a Masonic Funeral Service at 7:30 P.M. on Thursday in the funeral home. Additional visitation will be held on Friday-June 22, 2018 in the First Lutheran Church, 92 W. Walnut St., Washington from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. the hour of a funeral service with the Rev. Robert Grewe officiating. Burial will follow in the Washington Cemetery. Full military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Edwin Scott Linton Post #175 and the United States Navy.
