Loving husband, father, man of principles

Michael Scot Curran 65, of Washington, died unexpectedly on Sunday, April 9, 2017.  He was born February 7, 1952 in Dayton, Ohio, the son of John J. & Patricia Ludwig Curran.

Mr. Curran was a graduate of Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts. He received his BA from Washington & Jefferson College in 1974 and received his JD from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law in 1977.  He has been a sole practitioner since 1985 at M. Scot Curran & Associates. He has been a member of the Washington County Bar Association since 1978.  He has been the Support Master for Washington County since 2008.  He served on the board of the Pennsylvania Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers from 1990 to 2006, has chaired the Washington County Bar Association Special Professional Awareness Committee since 1990, and was recently elected to serve on the WCBA Board of Directors for a three-year term.  He has also chaired the WCBA’s Civil Court Rules Committee.  In addition to the WCBA, he is also a member and former President of the Academy of Trial Lawyers of Southwestern PA.  He served on the Salvation Army Advisory Board from 1997 to 2004, coached soccer at John F. Kennedy Catholic School from 1977 to 2003 and coached and served on the board of the McGuffey Youth Soccer Association from 1995 to 2004.

Mr. Curran was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

The 2012 Humanitarian Award was presented to M. Scot Curran in recognition of his dedicated service to the WCBA and the Legal Profession, most notably for his decades of care and concern for the health and welfare of the members of the legal community who seek assistance through the Bar Association’s Special Professional Awareness Committee and the statewide Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers organization.

Mr. Curran also loved sports. He played quarterback at Andover, was an all- conference soccer goalie at W& J, played baseball, hockey, loved to read, and enjoyed golfing especially with his Keystone League. Though he was a busy man, he always took time for his wife and children, they were everything to him. 

On April 22, 1978 he married Ellen L. O’Leary, who survives.  Also surviving is his daughter, Allison Curran (Michael Hilkin) of New York City; son, Scot M. Curran (Molly Weber) of Puyallup, Washington; brothers, John “Chip” P. (Mary K.) Curran of Bethel Park, & Mark (Karen) O’Leary of Washington; sisters, Susan (Lori) Curran of Dormont, Amy (Winfried) Paul of Thornburg, and Susan (Stephen) Jeffries of New York City. 

Mr. Curran was preceded in death by a brother, Kevin Curran.   

Mr. John J. Curran (the father of M. Scot Curran) preceded him in death along with his present wife, Hannah Curran.

Mrs. Patricia Ludwig Curran Schaffner (the mother of M. Scot Curran) survives along with her present husband, James in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Also surviving are 3 step-brothers; James (Sue) Schaffner of Virginia, Joseph (Michelle) Schaffner of Arizona, & William (Barbara) Schaffner of Pittsburgh, 6 step-sisters; Diane (Shawn) Gilson of Orlando, Florida, Judy (Michael) Hurst of Virginia, Cyndi Sandborn (Terry Divelblis) of McMurray, Carol Carney of Buffalo, New York, LuAnn (Fred) Luzano of Houston, Texas & Arlene (Charles) Fernandez of Houston, Texas, several nieces & nephews also survive.

Friends will be received on Tuesday, April 11, 2017 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. & 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. at the Warco-Falvo Funeral Home, Inc., 336 Wilson Avenue, Washington, Pa. 15301, S. Timothy Warco, supervisor/director, Susan Falvo Warco, director, S. Timothy Warco II, director.  A prayer service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 12, 2017 followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Washington.  Burial will follow at Queen of Heaven Cemetery. 

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the Salvation Army or to the charity of one’s choice.
